Jefferson County Cup

On Friday, February 18th, the best elementary teams in Jefferson County competed at the Performing Arts Center for the 6th Annual Jefferson County Cup.

Author Susan Grubb, an author of one of this year’s books, surprised students by making a special appearance. Susan signed autographs, held a Q&A session about the writing process and helped present the Jefferson County Cup trophy when the tournament concluded.

The tournament witnessed some fantastic battles. In the 5th place match, Culver defeated Metolius by a single point after a challenge to overturn a question was upheld. If the challenge had been reserved, Metolius would have defeated Culver.

The Eagles of Warm Springs had their highest finish in tournament history. They placed 4th. The team, which is largely intact from a year ago, is experienced and battle tested. They’ll head to the regional tournament in Prineville on Saturday, March 7th looking to make a deep run.

The final of the Jefferson County Cup pitted two familiar foes against one another. The Bears of Buff and the Eagles of Madras.

The two schools met in last year’s final with the Eagles taking home the cup. Madras was looking to repeat as champs and in doing so, etch their name on the trophy for a third time. Only one school has ever had their name on the cup three times, the Buff Bears.

The 32-question final witnessed a back and forth affair for the first half of the match. Tournament and regional finals expand to 32-questions as most matches are 16-questions

When the contest turned to content questions, away from title and author questions, Buff began to exert itself as the favorite.  When the match ended and the totals were calculated, the Bears had defeated the Eagles. And in doing so became the first school to win the cup four times.

All Jefferson County elementary schools are scheduled to be in action at the regional tournament in Prineville on Saturday, March 7th. The winner of the regional tournament will earn a berth to the state tournament in Salem.

The community is encouraged to come out and support 509J teams in Prineville. Food trucks will be on site for lunch and beverage options.
